What happens to us when everyday life vanishes? When school children can no longer see their friends and students have no campus life in which to take part? What is loneliness and what do we learn from it? Those and other questions were posed by young volunteers at the Berlinische Galerie as they planned an exhibition on loneliness. They asked six photographers to capture the feelings triggered by loneliness—during the corona pandemic in particular. In online meetings, each photographer developed a photo series in response to the question “What does loneliness do to us?” The photographs were exhibited via slide projector at the Berlinische Galerie’s parking lot project in July. The curators have now printed and framed a selection of photographs from the Berlinische Galerie show to accompany the Einstein Forum’s international conference Einsamkeit: Von der Versenkung in Gott zum sozialen Problem (December 10–11, 2021).

Additional support has been provided by the Berlinische Galerie, Berlin.
