Baldwin, BLM, and “Black Antisemitism”
The uprisings following the murder of George Floyd in May 2020 represented the most salient movement for racial justice in the US in a generation. The anti-police orientation of the uprisings, their explicit solidarity with Palestinian movements, and the increase in anti-Jewish violence in general in the past half decade has renewed interest in the history of Black-Jewish anti-racist solidarity and its tensions. That complicated history is frequently cheapened into a triumphalist liberal fantasy or exploited to revive the chimera of so-called “Black antisemitism.” In an intellectual environment where anti-racist movements and postcolonial studies are routinely accused of triviliazing antisemitism and worse, James Baldwin’s seminal 1967 essay on antisemitism and racism might provide a prescient resource for tracing the complex relations between anti-Black dispossession and antisemitism, anti-Blackness, whiteness, and Christendom. While flaming fears between Jewish and Black minorities has been a staple of American politics after the civil rights movement, it is also a tactic increasingly employed in German discourse.
René Aguigah ist Kulturjournalist und Moderator und leitet das Ressort Literatur von Deutschlandfunk und Deutschlandfunk Kultur. Nach einem Studium von Geschichte, Philosophie und Journalistik schrieb er für die taz, die FAZ und die Frankfurter Rundschau. Bis 2010 arbeitete er als Sachbuch-Redakteur bei der Zeitschrift Literaturen, bis 2005 bei WDR 3. 2013-15 gehörte René Aguigah der Jury für den Preis der Leipziger Buchmesse an.
Hannah Black ist Künstlerin und Autorin. Sie wird von der Isabella Bortolozzi Galerie in Berlin und der Arcadia Missa Gallery in London vertreten. Ihre Texte wurden in Artforum, The Guardian und an vielen anderen Stellen veröffentlicht. Ihr jüngstes Buch ist Tuesday or September or the End (2022).
Ben Ratskoff ist Assistenzprofessor an der Louchheim School of Judaic Studies am Hebrew Union College in Jerusalem und an der University of Southern California. Seine 2021 abgeschlossene Dissertation trägt den Titel Waltzing with Hitler: Black Writers, the Third Reich, and Demonic Grounds of Comparison, 1936-1940. Seine Texte erschienen in der Jewish Studies Quarterly sowie in der Los Angeles Review of Books, Truthout und Jewish Currents.
